The four wind turbines at Skelmonae have been up and running since early 2010 and we have been working hard to complete a range of facilities for visitors who want to come and se\u200be them. Public access has been created and the hillside offers everyone visiting it some magnificent, sweeping views across rolling farmland, all the way to Bennachie in the distance.<\/p>\n
To allow our visitors to enjoy their time in the fresh air (because naturally, it can be a bit bracing up here!), we\u2019ve laid a sheltered walking, cycling and horse-riding track. Alongside it, we\u2019ve planted flowering bulbs, species-rich grasses and wildflowers. These help to increase plant diversity and feed the insects, wild animals and birds, as well as looking beautiful.<\/p>\n
\u200bThe initial 2.5km long track is complete and has car parking spaces at both ends for the convenience of walkers. At the top of the hill we\u2019ve created an area with picnic benches and tables, plus an information board that identifies all the local landmarks that can be seen from there on a clear day. The path leads from the hillside and dips through a valley with a stream, pond and area of shady woodland that is home to many animals and birds. In Spring and Summer, the valley is often carpeted in wildflowers.<\/p>\n
There are now three more wind turbines on adjacent land at Hill of Skilmafilly, which began to generate electricity in late 2014. We’ve created another picnic area and installed an information board there too, as it also benefits from a 285 degree arc of amazing views – stretching all the way from the southeast to the north of Buchan.<\/p>\n
We then laid a further 1.6km of track at Hill of Skilmafilly, which is linked to the trail at Skelmonae by 1km of minor road, to form a quiet and attractive walking, cycling and horse-riding route that in total is more than 5km in length.\u200b<\/p>\n
